Decorating a Living Room

Desember 27th, 2010 by costoflivingbystate

The living room creates a lasting impression for all who enter. It reveals to your family and guests if you are formal, or an elegant or fun-loving and laid-back type of person. The living room sets the mood for the home and should be a reflection of the owners personal taste.

Your living room tells the people who go into it really who you are in a way. It might tell them if you’re a casual type of person, cheerful type of person, boring kind of person, neat freak, and so on you get what I mean, this room can be arranged in many different ways. This could be a formal room for some people and the casual family room for others it could be a gathering place for the family or it could be a TV watching room or a doing their homework type of room or just simply a place where people come and talk.

Typically in the past and even so now, that traditional fashion for the living room would be probably a symmetrical room with a couch in the middle and then to end tables with the coffee table in the middle and probably a picture over top of the couch and a couple lamps on the coffee tables. And the windows would be dressed up in some luxurious fabric trimmed with the user braiding or fringes.

These days though people have evolved away from this to a more casual look, they still keep some of the look in detail of various items like wood work and fabrics but they don’t go to heavy on these finishes a little less fancy trim work and a little less plush window coverings. And they tend to lean towards more comfortable furniture and more simple. The rooms are not set up in a symmetrical fashion as much, giving way to just neatly organized setting.

The rooms these days are more like a family rooms. The decor should still be coordinated with the rest of the contents. The way to rooms are decorated now is for the design of use not just to looks.

Home Cooked Meals and Nutrition - Assisted Living Homes

Desember 27th, 2010 by costoflivingbystate

Many people who are considering assisted living arrangements are worried about the food that they or their loved ones will be served. Most assisted living homes offer home cooked, nutritious meals. Getting the right balance of foods and making them palatable plays a huge roll in wellness. Assisted living homes typically offer food just like the resident would cook themselves, or their family would cook for them. What’s more, in smaller assisted living homes, the resident may be able to participate in shared common kitchen. This offers a unique opportunity to come together as a “family” and cook and eat together. This type of sharing is encouraged to foster stronger bonds among the residents and staff.

Cooking Together

In many adult group homes cooking as part of a group is very welcome. The residents under supervision of the staff many times will cook their meals together. Of course this is not mandatory but it is a fun way to share recipes and ideas. Many times the meals are cooked via a pre made menu and recipes that are prepared by a dietitian or facility manager.

Typically the main meal of the day is the meal that the residents will cook together, dinner and special occasions are prime time for this activity. Many times there will be cooking classes that are offered so these folks are well prepared to cook up food that is not only very palatable but chock full of nutrition.

Prepared Meals

When the residents are not cooking, the meals are normally prepared by a cook that follows a dietitian’s menu. This ensures that the residents get the best nutrition possible. The meals are cooked using wholesome ingredients that most folks use in their own homes.

Most meals are prepared by the cook who might also double as a staff member. The meals are well balanced and are based on the older adults’ daily requirements. Special dietary restrictions are always considered and the meals are geared toward being adjusted to reflect the same. Typically there are several items on the menu that are nutritionally sound.

Snacks

Assisted living homes are just an extension of the home that the resident is used to living in. Unlike in a hospital setting, residents that are hungry between meals also have an opportunity to be served snacks. Some residents may keep their own snacks in their rooms, while the dietary staff will also prepare snacks at particular times of day that residents may choose to eat if they wish.

Good food that is good for you can really make a difference. Assisted living homes know that feeding the stomach also fuels the body and the soul. Home cooked meals are a way to keep the quality of life strong, making sure that the residents have the opportunity if they so choose to participate in the preparation of their meals also feeds the soul and allows independence and decision making in one’s own life.

Living in Altea

Desember 26th, 2010 by costoflivingbystate

Many of you will one day have the wish to live in Spain. Than the choices are many, do you want to live near the coast or inlands, more to the south or at the Costa Brava. Many choices are coming towards you and the whole thing is not getting any easier. Do you want to live in a place with a lot of Brits or do you prefer the silence of the Spanish inlands?

For the people who want it all there is Altea. Although the few among us who really want to live somewhere in the inlands, far away from the civilized world and internet connections we will not be able to help.

Altea is a real Spanish fisher village with a small harbor and a all-overlooking church on a small hill near the sea. It was build there together with the village because on this hill there is always a very nice and refreshing current coming from the sea, and air-conditioning was only invented a couple of years ago…

At the big hill called the “Sierra Bernia” near Altea there are a few very nice urbanizations like Altea Hills or Sierra de Altea and Don Cayo which holds its own 9 holes golf course. From this mountain and these urbanizations the views to Altea and the further to the north village Alfaz del Pi are breathtaking.

In the old town at the village you find this typical Spanish small streets where you can find very nice cousy restaurants and bars. In the summer it is really busy at the square in front of the church which has been converted into one big terrace.

Assisted Living Activities

Desember 26th, 2010 by costoflivingbystate

Seniors in Assisted Living homes may not be able to do everything a younger and more agile person can do, but they certainly can still be active and not everything has to be done while sitting or lying down.

Activities can be creatively modified to incorporate canes, walkers, slower movement, sitting, etc, but still offer the elderly opportunities for fitness, health, brain activity, laughter, participation and good quality daily living.

Where images of bingo and bridge easily come to mind as activities for assisted living seniors, you should also consider Nintendo Wii, wheelchair races, dress up parties, sing alongs, dances, crafts, cooking, baking and so very much more.

Nintendo Wii can offer bowling, golf and other balance and agility movements that don’t have to jeopardize an elderly persons balance and risk of falling. Musical instruments can aid in relaxation, creative expression and group participation as well. Crafts can give the elderly a project that requires some focus, creativity and sense of accomplishment when completed. These can be shown off or given as gifts to their friends or family.

No matter how old one gets the joy of singing and laughing will always leave one feeling happier and joyful. All the more it should be a regular part of the lives of the elderly since they can begin to feel down about their health, distance from family or their simple lack of enthusiasm.

With the availability of CD’s and DVD’s a senior in assisted living can have a library of old-time TV or radio shows at their disposal such as “The Lucy Show”, “Laugh In”, “Abbot and Costello”, “Perry Mason”, “Gunsmoke”, “Bob Hope” and many more. Sing along DVD’s can be used by one senior, but create a fun atmosphere for many senior citizens to join in together for some much-loved and remembered favourites. Use these during a party and when not dancing to the music, they can all be singing along.

More activities for seniors in assisted living are:

• Gardening

• Computer class

• Pet visits

• Bible studies

• Trivia games

• Vaudeville night

• Movie night

• Pizza parties

• Dance-a-thons

• Wheelchair/walker races

• Costume parties

• Photo sessions

• Barbecues

• Story telling

• Crafts

Log Home Living - Problems and Benefits

Desember 25th, 2010 by costoflivingbystate

Today you’ll find that log homes are just as huge and beautiful as some of the traditional houses that are out there today. Many people desirea a secluded custom home of their dreams. However, many people are really not aware of all that comes with a homes made from logs. Although there are undoubtedly a variety of great benefits to log home living, you’ll find that there are some problems that log home owners often encounter along the way as well. Whether you go with a large log home or a smaller log cabin, you’ll find that there are both pros and cons.

Problems with Log Home living

While you probably just think about all the beauty and all the great benefits, before you decide that log home living is for you, it’s important that you realize that there are some problems as well. Here are just a few of the problems that can occur when you are purchasing or building your own custom home from logs.

- Building is Dangerous - First of all, you’ll find that actually building a log home is quite dangerous. Logs are extremely heavy and an accident with a log can take a limb or a life. So, this is a dangerous type of home construction and you need to realize this before you decide to build.

- Require Non-Cosmetic Upkeep - You’ll also find that most of these properties require quite a bit of non-cosmetic upkeep that most other homes do not. While you may hear a lot about these homes being low maintenance, this is not always the case. Wood preservation solutions must be applied to the logs in many cases, which can take time and money.

- It Can Be Difficult to Get a Home mortgage Loan - It’s quite a bit more difficult to get a home mortgage loan on a log home as well, which is something that you probably haven’t thought about. These are not traditional homes and finding the right home loan can be a real pain. So, before you decide that this is the right choice for you, make sure you understand that this difficulty is a reality when it comes to financing.

- Possible Bug Problems - Because the entire home is made of wood, there is the possibility of bug problems in the future. A log home would be a termite delight if you don’t keep up on your wood preservation and bug treatment.

Benefits of Log style Homes

Of course while there are quite a few problems that can come along with log home living, you’ll also find that there are many great benefits to owning a log home as well. Here are just a few of the great benefits that you can enjoy.

- Great Look - First and foremost is their great look and curb appeal. Many people actually choose log style homes solely for the beautiful look that they have. There is something rustic yet stately about these large log homes and many people love the way they look. However, looks is not the only great benefit.

- Excellent for the Environment - You’ll also find that log homes are great for the environment and if you are worried about conservation, this is definitely a great way to go. Trees are a renewable resource and this is what is used to build your log home. So, it’s a great choice for those who want to make sure that they protect the environment.

- Sturdy and Durable - Log style home living also provides you with a cool home that is sturdy and durable as well. You’ll have a property that is very sturdy that will hold up, even in bad weather. Also, you can be sure that these properties are going to last for a long time as well, which is another great benefit.

- Warm and Cozy - If you’re longing for a home that is going to be warm and cozy, then log home living may be for you. Because the log homes are built so tightly, they are very energy efficient and they’ll keep you warm all winter long and cool during the summers as well. You’ll also save on the heating and cooling bills.

- High Building Standards are Used - The building standards that are used for log cabins are very high today. This means you get a quality home and it also means that you have great value in your home as well. Usually log homes appraise out much higher than traditional homes that are about the same exact size. So, you’ll end up with more equity in your home and if you have to sell, you’ll be able to make a nice profit too.

Living in an RV - Earning Extra Money

Desember 25th, 2010 by costoflivingbystate

Living in an RV is fun to be sure. So what can you do to earn money if you need to supplement your income? We saw several methods in our 7 years on the road; maybe one will make sense to you.

Sell equipment RVers need. One fellow we met in Sunriver Oregon seemed to be doing quite nicely selling water filters. Every rig you see will have a filter system in line with the water system to the coach itself. Some places like the Colorado River campgrounds in Arizona have horrible water. Some places like Sunriver have great tasting tap water. Point being this fellow identified a product that RVers had to have. He spoke very authoritative on the subject of water filtration, and built trust with his fellow campers. He also sold his filters at a fair price. No going into town necessary. He even installed them at no charge. Not a big service but not all like getting their hands dirty.

Work part time at the campground. Especially in the peak summer month’s camps need extra help. Could be the guard shack, could be the camp restaurant, the camp store, etc. The pay isn’t much but lots of folks like the social interaction that type of job affords.

A real enterprising person ran the honey wagon. No going to the dump station, a pain to unhook, go dump, come back get re-leveled, etc. For $10 a pull he would come to your site and do the dirty (sorry) work for you right on the spot. Personally this man really earned his money, IMHO.

Now most parks have a wifi hookup to the net. If you have some unique knowledge to share, own a laptop, you can operate a website like mine…see below. Do not understand computers neither did I…no problem.

Living in an RV, it is fun and offers many ways to earn while enjoying the road. If extra money is holding you back come on in…the road awaits.

Living in the Philippines - Most Popular Urban Retirement Cities of Foreign Retirees

Desember 24th, 2010 by costoflivingbystate

When it comes to retirement locations in the Philippines, one has many options - major urban cities, larger rural cities, beach resorts, mountain retreats. Each has its own unique and attractive features. The major advantage of retirement in a major urban Philippines city are (i) international airport accessibility, (ii) excellent healthcare accessibility, (iii) all major sports activities, and (iv) secure, upscale shopping, night life and entertainment. In this category of major urban cities are the Manila metropolitan area, Cebu City in the Visayas area of the country, and Davao City in Mindanao.

MANILA

Manila is the capital of the country, and the primary port of entry for every foreigner flying to the Philippines. It is the gateway to the Philippines. For a foreigner seeking quick access in and out of the country, Manila is the place to be. Travel to Manila from California is 15 hours, from Hawaii it is 10 hours, from Tokyo it is a little over 4 hours, from Hong Kong it is less than 2 hours, from Singapore it is 3 hours, and from Europe it is basically 20 hours. Once you are in Asia, sitting in the China Sea, Manila is at the center. Trips to Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Viet Nam, and Indonesia are quick and easy from Manila.

Manila is actually part of a major metropolitan area with an overall population of over 11 million people. So yes, it is crowded overall, yet, like all major cities in the world, there are areas within the metropolitan area which are quite diverse from one another.

Depending on one’s retirement income, retiring foreigners tend to favor either the upscale, highly westernized Makati, Ortigas/Mandaluyong, or Alabang areas. These areas have all the amenities westerners are accustomed to, including all the biggest and most upscale shopping malls in the country. Makati is the financial hub of the Philippines, and it is full of western style upscale condominiums with all the latest amenities.

For those wanting an upscale, big city living, with access to the best entertainment, sporting events, unlimited shopping options, and most westernized lifestyle, within easy reach of foreign destinations, Manila is your best choice. The downside is that it is the most expensive than Cebu City and Davao City.

CEBU CITY

Cebu City is located on the island of Cebu in the chain of islands known as the Visayas. It is more centrally located in the country and is a domestic trading and transportation hub. It is much smaller than Manila, with a population less than 1 million, yet its people have a higher per capita income level. It is very pro business, and a more efficiently run city than Manila. It is very progressive and has become a large center of commerce. It has aggressively expanded its airport, which does receive certain direct international flights, though few in number.

Cebu has a large population of foreign retirees in relation to its population. Foreigners are drawn to its abundance of beaches and resorts. It is a beautiful city, surrounded by mountains on one side and the ocean on the other. Like Manila, it too has its upscale, modern shopping malls, casinos, and a great night life. Being a smaller city, getting around the city is much easier. It is now only beginning to see construction of high rise condominiums, which are abundant in Manila, and a favorite of western retirees.

Cebu has great medical facilities and it has just recently launched an effort in conjunction with the national government to further develop Cebu as a major medical tourism and retirement center for foreigners.

All in all, it has most of the westernized benefits of Manila, yet a lower cost of living, combined with the presence of many, many beautiful white sand beach resorts. Those who love living near the seaside, have interests in diving and other water sports, yet like the efficiency and amenities of a smaller modern city, then Cebu City would be your choice.

DAVAO CITY

Davao City is THE city of Mindanao, and by square miles it is the second largest city in the world. Its population is approximately 1.4 million. Located on the southern of Mindanao, it is the most rural of the three major urban cities, and it has the lowest cost of living. So, if you enjoy the lifestyle of a large city, but have limitations on your cost of living, Davao is the place for you.

Davao City does not get large numbers of foreign travelers, yet for those seeking outdoor adventures, the options are plentiful. Living in Davao is a bit like living in both an urban and a rural city, as the city has modern shopping centers, upscale gated communities and hotels, yet living there you become deeply rooted to the land outside the city. Just outside the city is Mt Apo with forested slopes and abundance of hiking opportunities, and located on a gulf, it is only a short boat ride to white sand beaches. Most of the land outside the city has been turned over to massive plantations growing pineapples, bananas, and other citrus. The city has a new, great world class golf course, and low rise condominiums are newly being built. It has committed itself to the development of a world class medical center, and is aggressively pursuing medical tourism.

In conclusion, it has been my experience that for a person who wants to retire in a major urban city in the Philippines, the choice between Manila, Cebu and Davao usually comes down to one’s pension and/or other monthly retirement income. Manila is the most expensive, Cebu is next, and Davao has the lowest cost of living. Manila is the most cosmopolitan, and the Davao the most rural. All three are attractive spots for a foreigner seeking retirement in the Philippines in an urban environment.

Forever Living Products - Honest Forever Living Products Business Review

Desember 24th, 2010 by costoflivingbystate

Civilizations around the world have used aloe vera for its health benefits

While this is true much remains to be discovered within the Forever Living Products business opportunity. Personally, if you only join a certain business opportunity based on emotion without any research you are setting yourself up for failure.

That is why you don’t need to do this yourself. All will be revealed to you in this short and simple review. Do keep your eyes peeled because its going to be very fast.

1) The Story Of The Aloe Vera Company

The whole story of the “aloe vera company” began with one man named Rex Maughan. It was birthed because Rex had a real urge to bring together a combination of better health and financial freedom. In May 1978, he invited 43 people to attend the first Forever Living Products meeting in Tempe, Arizona.

In 1984, it became the first company to receive the Aloe Science Council Seal of Approval for its products consistency and purity. That is why you see the very term Aloe vera company tagged with Forever Living Products today.

2) Your Product Choices?

Look, I don’t want to sound like a parrot but we should at least know what you’re getting yourself into. Forever Living products mainly consists of cosmetics, food additives and household goods. You choose from Aloe toothpaste to Aloe Vera Gel drinks in different flavors. Think about getting the Aloe craze out to your friends and family and you got it right.

Here’s a fun fact for you. Due to the presence of lignin, aloe is the perfect vehicle to transport other elements with which it is combined. This is why thousands of medical and cosmetic products are mixed with aloe. Aloe Vera has to be processed within hours of harvest to preserve its “freshness”.

3) The Compensation Plan: Dead Giveaway?

Since Forever Living Products mainly rely on direct distribution to expand its reach you will come in as an independent distributor for them. Of course, there is no doubt that you will work with a network marketing system.

Here’s how it works:

a) Forever Living operates on a Stairstep Breakaway plan

b) You can start to earn 30% and move on to 45% in direct commission based on rank

c) When someone under you “breaks away” you earn between 2% to 6%

There are other ways to earn but we will only touch on the core principles here. Recruiting is almost mandatory if you want to make it big with Forever Living Products.

Something Else

If you like Aloe Vera then Forever Living Products might be alright for you. However, keep in mind that your best shot at achieving a good flow of prospects comes from a good marketing system. Invest in one which you can learn and earn at the same time.

What is Your Definition of Living Large?

Desember 23rd, 2010 by costoflivingbystate

This verbiage, which means to have or exhibit an affluent or overly extravagant lifestyle, has a totally different meaning to each person individually. Living large is simply a goal or dream that people have and wish to accomplish sometime in their life. To you it might mean designer clothes, star strutted handbags, sunshine, and the top down on your favorite BMW. To me it might mean more time with my family, making other people happy, and the extravagant house I want to give me family. Maybe its just a combination of both- but that is strictly an individual decision. The commonality between both definitions is that if someone dreamt them, there is a way to fulfill them. Living large has always been an option for the stars, and people that can afford to do so. LA, Hollywood, Europe, Red Carpet- is that where we have to go to live large?

Absolutely not. With so many options of creating income, many people are learning and taking a chance now a days more so than ever at living large. Every day people are becoming business savvy and product savvy and realizing that if the research a little bit harder they can get the products they want, at a price they can afford- and in most cases do it all while owning their own business, staying home with their children, and living life outside the fast paced corporate world that has been dubbed as the norm. There is a way for you to join those of us who have decided that we wanted to break out of the norm and live large!

This quote was passed along to me, and this summarizes exactly how to live large- “Each of us has an inner dream that we can unfold if we will just have the courage to admit what it is” - J. Cameron

Living Large Cocktail

¼ Dreams

¼ Goals

¼ Action

¼ Courage

Realize what your inner dream is, we all have something tucked away in our hearts and in our minds. Write it down! When we write things down it makes them tangible and easier to believe. At this point, your dream is not just a thought or feeling anymore. Create a time line and goal of when you are going to make your dream become a reality. Taking action is the number one step to making things happen and become a real and interacting piece of your life. This all takes courage and yes you will hit bumps along the way but just remember don’t stop! Failing is part of the learning process. The most important part of failing is getting back up and creating success from the lessons you learn. If you can focus on these four ingredients- you will write you own definition and create you own cocktail to living life large!

Living Arrangements and Accommodations - Assisted Living Homes

Desember 22nd, 2010 by costoflivingbystate

Living arrangements and accommodations in assisted living homes will vary. They can be very opulent and resort like or more family oriented. There is literally an arrangement for everyone. There are several different models that assisted living homes can be set up under. From the very small intimate model to those that are like living in an opulent hotel community.

Actual Homes

Many adult group homes are set up in actual homes. Usually these homes are four or more bedrooms with central living areas. Each resident has their own space in the form of a bedroom and may or may not have their own bathroom. The bathrooms might be shared. In homes that are set up in this arrangement the kitchen, living room and dining room are community areas. Meals are served family style and there is a sense of an intimate family setting.

In all of these homes there is twenty four hour staff. The staff is there to supervise activities including dispensing medications, handling personal care needs, and transporting residents for shopping, doctor’s appointments, and errands. This is a warm intimate setting, where fast friends are made. It is like having a community of folks living together that shares a common bond, are from the same generation in most cases, and can relate to one another extremely well. One of the greatest benefits of adult group homes is that it allows people who would ordinarily be alone most of the day to socialize with others and participate in activities that they enjoy.

Facilities and Communities

There are some assisted living homes that are set up in apartment buildings or in large communities. The assisted living homes that are set up in apartment buildings usually are set up with centralized areas that are used for organized games. They may contain a restaurant style dining room and other facilities to include gyms and pools. Each resident has their own apartment which is typically a one bedroom, living room and eat-in kitchen with a private bath. Usually these apartments are set up with call buttons in each room and an intercom system. The same services are provided that are provided in smaller assisted living homes just on a larger scale.

There are some adult group homes that are actual communities. The communities are typically divided into different levels. There are almost completely independent living opportunities as the first level, than an intermediate part of the community where the folks that need a bit more help may live than finally an area where the living is very dependent on the staff for care. These types of assisted living homes provide the same services as the smaller homes do but on a much grander scale.

Adult group homes come in a variety of sizes and a full range of accommodations, it is entirely up to the individual and their family as to what type is right for them.
